The rose of Sharon

“And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.”

‭‭Acts‬ ‭12:13-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Early hours of this morning. God reminded me of Rhoda  and this story in particular. A bit of backstory, so Jesus has ascended to heaven and is to come again, the disciples receive the Holy Spirit as promised.

Works and wonders have been birth: the lame man at the beautiful gate, 3,000 souls saved after a sermon Peter gave, gentiles are receiving salvation. Everything is smooth sailing, what could possibly go wrong ? Persecution! Stephen has been stoned to death, James has been beheaded by Herod. Peter has been to prison twice by Acts 12. With every great mission comes resistance. This does not stop the disciples, they intercede, the church is growing people like Saul are saved. They rejoice in their persecution.

So the previous verse before 13-16, James is beheaded, Peter has been put in prison the church are praying without ceasing. An angel comes and smotes Peter and he is asked get up and leave. Wonderful! Amazing! I wonder what was going through his mind. Like anyone, Peter returned to his home, John mark’s mother’s house who is named Mary.

He knocks on the door and Rhoda was present. She heard his voice that she was so glad that she didn’t open up but, went to tell the others of the good news. You would think because they were praying for this they would rejoice with her. The opposite happens actually which is quite amusing they diagnose her with madness and tell her it’s only his angels. (my pastor taught me that we have personal angels who look like us, mind blowing). So why did God remind me of this ?

He said that they are things he shares with us, that when we share with us they think we are crazy, this could be dreams, ambitions, future plans, prophecy. People of faith and non-faith will claim we didn’t hear right. We shouldn’t be discouraged!

Also He emphasised on keeping things to ourselves, for everything has a time and season. Sometimes things are not meant to be known yet! Just like Elizabeth keeping her pregnancy secret for 5 months till Mary found out on the 6th month through divine revelation. (Luke 1:24 and Luke 1:39-41).

Another beautiful analogy of how God wants a personal relationship in this story is that, As Peter knocked on the gate so does God knock on our hearts, He won’t force himself in. As Rhoda listened she knew Peter’s voice because she spent time with him. Do you know your fathers voice? His voice brought gladness so does God’s voice. The Bible describes God’s words sweeter than honey. Do you know how sweet honey is ?!!! Let alone sweeter. Lastly, instead of Rhoda opening the gate and letting Peter in, some of us are so quick to leave the presence of God without completely letting him in . In hurry, to share the little with those who don’t even believe, too quick to show off, too quick to share the joy that’s not complete.

Rhoda means rose

“I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.”
‭‭Song of Solomon‬ ‭2:1KJV

May we bask and be planted in the Lord’s garden.

The Holy Spirit is the greatest teacher! I pray that in this new month of February that we will completely bask in the presence of God and keep secrets that the Lord gives to us so kindly.
